RUSSELL’S WEIGHT APPROACHING THREE BILLS

Friday, March 26th, 2010

RaiderBeat.com Staff Report

Many people scoffed at a report more than a week ago about Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell weighing 271 pounds upon reporting to the team’s offseason workout program in Alameda, Calif.

As it turns out, those who scoffed might have had ample reason to do so. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Russell weighed an astounding 290 pounds when he showed up.

And that was after he spent a month or so working out at an athletics training facility in Phoenix, Ariz.

To put that in perspective, consider that only 12 Raiders on the roster weigh more than 290 pounds (defensive end Desmond Byrant is right at 290): offensive linemen Khalif Barnes, Cooper Carlisle, Robert Gallery, Mario Henderson, Chris Morris, Brandon Rodd, Samson Satele, Erik Pears and Langston Walker; and defensive linemen William Joseph, Tommy Kelly, and Richard Seymour.

It might be five weeks or more before the public gets its first look at Russell. That gives Russell a little bit of time to get his weight down to a more-acceptable level.

Our guess is, that if Russell weighed less than the 271 or 290, that the Raiders would parade Russell in front of the media, invite newspaper photographers and TV cameras to snap and film away as an answer to the reports. Their silence is damning, though not full-proof admission that Russell is that far out of shape.

There isn’t any way to spin this one in a positive fashion. If Russell weighs that much, or anywhere in the vicinity, then he isn’t in the shape the team wants him to be in for that position. If he did, in fact, lose weight during his time in Arizona, then it begs the question, “Just how much did the Big Guy weigh last season?”

And if Russell does weigh that much, that might help explain any interest in Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. It won’t be long before we see Russell in person and get a better feel for his weight. Until then, the Raiders can expect reports to fly about Russell’s weight as long as they keep him away from cameras and the public.

MCNABB’S AGENT SAID HE HASN’T CONTACTED ANY TEAMS

Friday, March 26th, 2010

RaiderBeat.com Staff Report

Finally, someone has the courage, or job security, to go on the record in regard to the rumous surrounding Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

On Friday, McNabb’s agent, Fletcher Smith told the Philadelphia Daily News that the Eagles and McNabb haven’t had any discussions about McNabb being traded. That also means that Smith hasn’t contacted any teams about working out a trade for McNabb.

That’s an important little tidbit because teams usually green light a player’s agent whenever they want to trade a player. You would think the Eagles would be classy enough after all McNabb has done for that franchise to allow his agent to seek out the best deal.

It becomes an even bigger point because it might require a team trading for McNabb to agree to a new contract so that they don’t acquire a player with only one year left on his contract.

“If we get to that bridge, we’ll have to cross it,” Smith said about a potential trade. “Donovan has been there a long time. I would think they would want to do right by him, reach out, tell him what their intentions are.”

Time will tell. As the world turns with McNabb as the center of attention until further notice.

It’s also possible that any and all conversations taking place between the Raiders and the Eagles has been limited to Raiders managing general partner Al Davis and Eagles coach Andy Reid. If that’s the case, no one knows what’s going on for certain.

FORMER RAIDERS LB PASSES AWAY AT 39

Friday, March 26th, 2010

RaiderBeat.com Staff Report

One-time Raiders outside linebacker Elijah Alexander died Wednesday night almost five years after he was diagnosed with cancer. Alexander was 39.

Medical City Hospital spokeswoman Bianca Jackson told the Associated Press that Alexander died at the Dallas facility. Jackson would not comment on the cause of death. However, Alexander was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow, in 2005.

The Raiders did not issue a statement on Alexander’s passing.

Alexander joined the NFL after a standout collegiate career at Kansas State University. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1992, three seasons with the Denver Broncos, three with the Indianapolis Colts and his final two with the Raiders in 2000 and ‘01.

Alexander started 29 of the 30 games he played for the Raiders.

PFT.COM: ASOMUGHA WOULD GO TO EAGLES IN MCNABB TRADE

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

RaiderBeat.com Staff Report

ProFootballTalk.com has developed a reputation for taking the time to check out tips. More and more, the well-respected site nails the story. However, we take umbrage to a report that surfaced a little while ago that says Raiders All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha would be part of the compensation in a trade to the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Donovan McNabb.

Huh? Why in the world would the Raiders trade arguably the best all-around cornerback in the NFL for a soon-to-be 34-year-old quarterback who has taken more than his share of hits the past 11 seasons?

The only conceivable angles that makes sense are as follows: the Raiders have won only 29 games in Asomugha’s seven seasons, so why not get something in return for someone who can’t make the difference by himself; and Asomugha has only one season left on his contract.

On the first count, there’s little chance that McNabb’s play could more than offset the effect of playing without Asomugha. Secondly, McNabb also is in the final year of his contract.

ProFootballTalk.com attributes an unnamed “tipster” with a reliable track record. The tipster also said that the Raiders would receive washed-up cornerback Asante Samuel.

Again, huh? About the only thing that seems certain is that the Eagles are eager to dump McNabb before they are obligated to pay him a $6.2 million roster bonus in May.

It’s hard to envision Raiders managing general partner Al Davis agreeing to trade Asomugha, one of his prized draft picks of all time. Davis used a late first-round pick on Asomugha in 2002, when most teams projected him as a late-rounder.

It took several years for Asomugha to mature into the player that Davis envisioned. By the time that came to pass, Asomugha had turned into the league’s best cornerback, by many accounts.

More on this story as it unfolds. It sounds as if it’s going to get even stranger before McNabb finds a home.

RAIDERS EXPLORE POSSIBILITY OF ADDING MCNABB, T.O.

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

RaiderBeat.com Staff Report

A Raiders official called RaiderBeat.com to pass on a juicy little tidbit that piqued our attention. After dropping the phone, we regrouped and processed the information: We were told not to discount the possibility of the Raiders trading for Philadelpia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and then signing free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens.

The official cautioned that it’s just a thought being bandied about at Raiders central right now but that it’s very real. It seems pretty farfetched until you break down the components.

The Eagles have tired of McNabb and want to clear the way for Kevin Kolb to take over. Trading for McNabb also would free the Eagles from paying McNabb a $6.2 million roster bonus in May. The Eagles also have Michael Vick on the roster, which gives them an experienced backup in case Kolb struggles as a full-time starter for the first time.

So, that makes perfect sense and seems rather doable. From there, the Raiders could give Owens the kind of offer he has yet to receive from any other team the first three weeks of free agency. The longer he goes without a contract to his liking, the more itchy he becomes to jump at the first attractive offer.

Raiders managing general partner Al Davis has a thing for receivers who have been productive over a long stretch, even if they do come with baggage.  Within the past decade or so, Davis has signed Andre Rison, Jerry Rice and Javon Walker, to name a few.

Rison and Rice panned out fine. Signing Walker was a colossal mistake. Davis doesn’t care about past mistakes. He just moves on to the next bold move.

Trading for McNabb and signing Owens would pass as one of his boldest strokes, for sure. It would give coach Tom Cable a proven quarterback and a No. 1 receiver, something he lacks on his roster today.

Owens caught 124 passes for 1,963 yards and 20 touchdowns in 21 games for the Eagles in 2004 and ‘05, when he and McNabb were one of the top tandems in the league.

Talk about creating incredible buzz and excitement for the upcoming season. As it stands, fans are just about through with quarterback JaMarcus Russell, and they weren’t moved by the play of receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey last season. Trading for McNabb and signing Owens solves both issues with two strokes of the pen.

We remain unconvinced that this will happen. Just the same, the Eagles seem intent upon trading McNabb and Owens hasn’t received an offer three weeks into free agency, so it remains possible.

Perhaps this helps explain why the Raiders have been so quiet in free agency this offseason. Davis has been lying low, working the phones and waiting for the opportune time to strike. If so, this will send ripples through the league and Raider Nation.

RAIDERS 2010 NFL DRAFT PICKS AND HOW ACQUIRED

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

RaiderBeat.com Staff Report

Here’s a breakdown of the Raiders selections in the 2010 NFL Draft April 22-24 and how they acquired each pick:

Round — No. overall — How acquired

First round — No. 8 — Own pick
Second round – No. 39 — Own pick
Third round – No. 69 — Own pick
Fourth round – No. 106 — Own pick
Fifth round – No. 138 — Own pick
Fifth round — No. 158 — From New England Patriots as part of compensation for trade of defensive end Derrick Burgess
Seventh round — No. 215 — Own pick
Seventh round – No. 251 — Compensatory pick

Notes: The Raiders traded a third-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley. The pick came from the Patriots in the Burgess deal. Also, the Raiders traded their 2010 sixth-round pick, as well as a 2009 seventh-rounder, to the Carolina Panthers last year in exchange for a sixth-rounder in the 2009 NFL Draft, which they used on tight end Brandon Myers.

WILL RAIDERS FIRST-ROUND DRAFT PICK BE IN NEW YORK?

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

RaiderBeat.com Staff Report

We now know eight college players who plan on attending the NFL Draft in New York on April 22 in hopes of hearing their name called within the top 10 selections.

They are: Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma State offensive tackle Russell Okung, Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan, Oklahoma offensive tackle Trent Williams, Tennessee defensive tackle Dan Williams, Tennessee safety Eric Berry, and Penn State defensive tackle Jared Odrick.

The Raiders own the rights to the No. 8 pick, yet that doesn’t mean that one of the eight listed above is destined to become a member of the silver and black. Quarterbacks Tim Tebow (Florida), Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame) and Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) have yet to decide whether to attend the festivities.

It’s also possible that Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes, Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant and Oklahoma defensive tackle Terrance Cody will go somewhere in the top 10, which would bump some of the others out of the spotlight.
