One of the all-time-great Raiders, cornerback Mike Haynes announced that he has prostate cancer and will undergo surgery Monday in the San Diego area.
Jay Paris of the North County Times reports that the Pro Football Hall of Famer learned of the diagnosis during a screening he took at the recent Hall of Fame ceremonies.
“I would have not known I had it except for the screening I did at the Hall of Fame recently,” he told the North County Times. “I had my physical (beforehand) and there was no reason to do it again. But they were there, I took another prostate screening and found out, lo and behold, I have prostate cancer.”
Haynes, 55, said the cancer was found in the early stages, and the prognosis is for a complete recovery.
“One of the things I’m hoping to do is get the word out to all males that the (prostate specific antigen) test may not be enough,” Haynes said. “You really need to have a biopsy if you have a family history of this. That is how it showed up for me. My PSA would not have shown a problem.”
Haynes played for the Raiders from 1983-89. He joined the Raiders after a superb career with the New England Patriots. He was named All-Pro in 1977, 78, 82, 84 and 85. He was elected in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
