A last-ditch effort to revive on-again, off-again talks with the Raiders about signing free-agent offensive tackle Khalif Barnes failed Monday.
The Raiders informed Barnes’ agent, Kenny Zuckerman, that they no longer are interested in signing Barnes, according to a team source.
The two sides discussed the parameters for a deal late last week and appeared close to working out the details. Managing general partner Al Davis stepped in and halted the negotiations because he isn’t ready to commit to who he wants protecting quarterback JaMarcus Russell’s blindside.
Davis, according to the team source, wasn’t sold on Barnes and still is considering using Oakland’s first-round draft pick (No. 7) on one of the many offensive tackle prospects available in this year’s NFL Draft.
The Raiders released Kwame Harris in February and have been discussing potential ways to fill the void ever since.
Third-year player Mario Henderson is the projected starter for now. Erik Pears was signed earlier this month and is viewed as a potential starter. The plans could change in an instant if the Raiders pursue a free agent such as Marvel Smith or opt to draft a tackle April 25-26.
Zuckerman could not be reached for comment. A Raiders official said he is not permitted to comment on contract negotiations.

I’m ready for some real news already!
Something about that gummy bear chick…
Great.. we shouldnt be begging his Butt to sign with us. Take it or Leave it.. Not like SD with L.T. .. with Al you either take it.. or get the hell out..
HOPE BARNES REGRETS THIS MOVE.

Marvel and Khalif have the same agent so we’ll see. I prefer Barnes…
Is Marvel Smith a free agent? Somehow, I find that hard to believe… He’s wayyy better than Barnes if he is, but I think he’s still a Steeler
Alz Lawyer - Marvel Smith is indeed an unrestricted free agent.
That’s good news. Now sign him, Henderson, as well as he held up at the end of the season, is not the answer at LT. And he’s a better player than Barnes, and hopefully wont cost much more.
If barnes had started 16 games for the Pats, Steelers, hell the Cards I might be upset but starting for the Jags and wont jump at the opportunity to play some Raider Football then we dont need him big al has shown us he is going after proven talent for the most part and if he says no then i stand by the owner just like i stand by our QB yes still upset over the Stafford article
Teams just don’t let go good starting LT and if Tra Thomas at the age of 34 plus was signed before Barnes, then you know is play must of tailed off.
I would like us to see if Adam Snyder or David Baas is available for trade. Snyder played LT, when Jonas Jennings was hurt 2 yrs ago and played pretty well and can play Guard, David Baas played center at Michigan and has played some guard.
Why the hell is a 26 year old starting left tackle still out there at this point if there are not some serious questions about his ability?
Jags signed Tra Thomas(34) instead of bringing back barnes(26)
I am glad to see the raiders are not overpaying people who don’t deserve it. I am starting to see a difference in this offseason form the last six. If you aren’t willing to be a raider for the prestige of the team and are just looking for a pay day then we don’t need you kick rocks. I hope that we can persue Roy Williams I think that he would be a great addition to the team. He is a very phsyical saftey and will make recievers pay for going across the middle.
You would be paying Barnes based on potential.
Smith is older and he has had serious injuries the last couple seasons.
I say sign Marvel. His age and injuries should keep the price down and then we can draft a left tackle of the future. I know we are all nervous because of the Robert Gallery debacle (he’s a great left guard now, for what it’s worth), but I can see Al deciding he wants a left tackle and then letting Tom go get who he wants. And I trust Tom.
I don’t know too much about Barnes, but I do know that Marvel Smith is an Oakland native and he’s a pretty good tackle when healthy. If we can sign him to a reasonable contract, then I’m all for it.
That gummi bear chick looks yummy. I hope the Raiders get their act together. It is a long time coming. Raider fan for 34 years and for life!
