The Raiders signed veteran quarterback Charlie Frye on Monday. The Raiders confirmed the signing on their website.
Frye, 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, played for the Seattle Seahawks last season as a backup to Matt Hasselbeck and Seneca Wallace.
Frye, 27, worked out for the Raiders in March but wasn’t offered a contract at the time. He joins starter JaMarcus Russell, backup Jeff Garcia, Bruce Gradkowski, Andrew Walter and Danny Southwick on the roster.
Frye’s signing is yet another strong signal that Walter’s days are numbered wearing a silver-and-black uniform. Walter is in the final year of his contract with the Raiders and has made it clear that he isn’t happy being kept around any longer.
Walter hasn’t attended any offseason workouts other than the mandatory mini camp in early May. Signing Frye makes it more likely that the Raiders have had enough with Walter’s attitude and are about to dump him, assuming they can’t find a team willing to trade for him.
Frye originally was selected in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He soon became Browns starter but lost his job in 2007 when he was replaced in the first game by Derek Anderson, who responded with an impressive season.
The Browns were so impressed by Anderson’s potential that they traded Frye to the Seahawks for a sixth-round draft pick. He is the only quarterback in NFL history to be traded after starting the first game of the same season.
Frye’s best NFL season came in 2006, when he played in 13 games and totaled 2,454 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Why why why? Are they planning on Russell being a bust Garcia stepping in and when he retires maybe Russell can come back in and play? Ugh Oakland didn’t need another QB.
hey frye is better than gradkowski probably. i think it’s not a bad idea to have russell, garcia, and frye. think about it, does anyone know who the backup to rivers is? i don’t…god forbid some “unfortunate” completely “accidental” injury befall the chargers starting QB early in the season. same goes for KC. at least denver has Simms (chuckle). we need depth at every position.
That is true and Walters is on his way out the door. Oakland should still trade with NE but trade Burgess and Walters for they O-line player they drafted, 2nd rd next year and their backup QB. I think Burgess is a liability and injury prone plus he brings the negative attitude that Oakland is trying to change. I think this is our year to turn things around. Cable had half of last year instead of being thrown into a new situation at the beginning of the season he started to turn it around last year. So a fresh start now and Kiffin was a joke. He had a negative attitude that didn’t bring good things to the team.

Makes no sense to me. Absolutely none. They have much more glaring needs to be signing players to fill than another QB, that’s for sure.
agreed we need to be stacking players in more positions of need, apparently cable has not found the either the right priced players or he doesn’t like the baggage they bring to oakland with them. don’t worry there will be more signings. there’s a reason players like ellis are not signed with another team yet.
another possible benchwarmer for the season
Who cares? why is everyone getting so upset over camp fodder? obviously outside of Russell and Garcia.. none of the other QBs have shown they deserve a spot.. its competition for 3rd string.. LOL not like Fry is going to beat out Russell or Garcia.. but ill tell ya.. id feel more comfortable with Frye behind center then those other 3 knuckleheads.. i just feel bad for Walter.. kid never had a chance..
[...] The Raiders signed Charlie Frye, and thusly all but say goodbye to Andrew Walter. So sad. RaiderBeat [...]
f*ck all you jamarcuss haters.the only reason they signing for qbs is because the need them to thow in ota and in mini camp the dont want to burn out jruss and garbcia
Thank you Raider Beat for being on the ball and always breaking the news first. I wonder who will be the starting quarterback come October.
No way he stays on the roster by the time the season starts. He obviously isn’t a starter anymore but his contract has to have been at least a little below the salary of an average starting QB. That IS just me assuming though. We already got starter money at QB’s #1 and 2. He’s gotta be just a filler. But hey Al… How about signing someone that actually is going to help the team.
You right tommy car with ota and training camp so many 2 a days burns out arms so u need more, 4 with walter gone soon…pc
Charlie Frye is a great pick-up for the Raiders. A solid QB and given the chance with a decent line and receivers, he could do very well. A great student of the game, experienced and a team player. It’s a shame he had to play for Crennel and the poor excuse of a suspected GM in Phil Savage.
