Wide receiver Chaz Schilens broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot in practice Tuesday morning against the 49ers.
The injury occurred early during a drill when Schilens planted his left foot and attempted to make a sharp cut. He was on crutches after practice.
On the bright side, receiver Javon Walker is expected back at practice Monday. Based on how he has looked in individual workouts since camp opened, Walker is ready to regain his No. 1 role. He has been rehabilitating from an offseason surgery on his right knee.
Schilens has been Oakland’s most impressive receiver during training camp, and he caught five passes in the first exhibition game against the Dallas Cowboys last Thursday.
It’s now incumbent upon the other receivers to fill the void until Schilens returns, perhaps as soon as the regular-season opener, if all goes well, he said.
That appears a bit optimistic based on the prognosis for this kind of injury. The metatarsal bone is a slow-healing bone, and a person with this kind of injury typically is instructed to immobilize the foot for a month.
This forces rookies Louis Murphy and Darrius Heyward-Bey to intensify their learning if they are to contribute right away.
Johnnie Lee Higgins also can expect more playing time, even if it’s not as one of the starters.
It’s logical to assume that Walker and one of the rookies will begin the season as the starters and remain in that role until Schilens returns and if none of the other receivers shows he is worthy of being a starter.
Schilens’ injury also makes it likely that one of the numerous long-shot candidates for roster spots will make the 53-man roster and stick around until Schilens heals well enough to resume playing.
Those players are: Shawn Bayes, Samie Parker, Nick Miller, Todd Watkins, Jonathan Holland and Will Franklin. Miller and Holland have looked the best in camp so far.

I will keep my fingers crossed that chaz is ready for the opener against SD. I hate losing starters in preseason; but at least it is not a serious injury that would effect his future. Most are saying that full recovery is pretty standard in this type injury. Since I feel we are at least 2 years away from being a Super Bowl contender (we need to use next years draft to seriously upgrade our defensive line and middle linebacker position I love Kirk but would like to see him play weakside backer and get a BEAST run stuffing MLB). I am an old Raiders fan who has seen us at the top three times. The only thing this injury does is perhaps cost us a game or two this year. Since we had zip chance of super bowl this year anyway; to me, its not that big a deal. In fact losing an extra game or two gives us a better chance to draft stud defensive tackles. It will also make us stronger in the long run with Russel able to spend more time developing a better chemistry with our other wide recievers. Please note I said tackles as in plural. with the Burgess pick we get a one, a two, and 2 threes. I lean toward
picking the best beast run stopping MLB we can get; and three of the best defensive tackles in the draft. Time to clean house on our defensive line. Even if the chargers beat us on opening day it is no big deal. Without Merriman and with LT running out of gas; the chargers are heading straight down in the immediate future. The Raiders on the other hand are going straight up and have made tremendous improvement since Cable took over. We are building a serious contender and with next years defensive draft class; we will be playoff bound for MANY years. To those 21 add solid starters Lorenzo Neal, Javon Walker, Samson Satele(only 23, Kirk Morrison, and Michael Huff. Up to 26 now. Plus the jury is still out on this years Rookies; Mike Mitchell, David Nixon, Slade Norris, DHB, Nick Miller and Matt (bald as a billiard ball) Shaughnessy. With the exception of two players Lorenzo O’Neal and Javon Walker every one of these players should be with us for many years to come. I expect over 20 of them to be with us for our next Super Bowl victory (number four) which is MAXIMUM five years from now. If you are impatient and want a Super Bowl victory in the next couple of years; leave Raider Nation and go root for Pittsbug or New England. Come back in 5 years. Chaz will be a beast this year when he gets back and we have a nice stable of WR’s in camp so we should be fine. I really like Murphy, Miller, and DHB should get some more looks with Chaz sidelined as long as teams don’t double team him too much. Walker just doesn’t exude confidence to me so I’d rather let the young guys get after it the way they did in week one. Holland looked good as did Franklin and Bayes, regardless who they were going up against. I like what the future brings at that position and I agree with the others, our backs should be Bush and D-Mac with Fargas as a back up. As long as our oline plays great and stays healthy we will be a much better team this year.
We need to go after Charles Rogers.. the Former #2 pick at WR. He is done with rehab and still believes he can play. Atleast pay him minimum and at the 4th WR spot he may still be able to perform. Just send him deep and bomb it out while DHB takes the other side deep.
