RaiderBeat.com Staff Report
Raiders coach Tom Cable was given an opportunity Wednesday to shut the door on the possibility of re-signing veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia.
Instead, Cable left open the possibility.
“We haven’t talked about it at this point,” Cable said. “That’s all I can say right now.”
In other words, it’s not out of the question. As we opined Tuesday during our Live Chat session, it’s likely that the Raiders will let Garcia explore his other options before approaching him about the prospect of returning to the team that released him Sept. 5.
That would give the Raiders more time to evaluate the progress of starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell and make a better determination on whether he is in a mini-slump or someone who needs some time to collect his thoughts on the bench while a proven player gets a shot.
Garcia was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday, two weeks or so after they signed him as insurance for injured starter Donovan McNabb.
However, the stellar play of Kevin Kolb, as well as the return to health of McNabb and the presence of Michael Vick, made Garcia expendable. He was guaranteed only two games’ pay.
On Tuesday, a Raiders official told RaiderBeat.com that the Raiders aren’t inclined to re-sign Garcia, for several reasons.
One, they are committed to Russell for the long-term. Two, Cable is pleased with the quarterbacks on the roster. Also, Garcia still believes that he has enough left to be a starter in the NFL.
It’s likely that Garcia will draw interest from teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his former team, the Miami Dolphins – they traded for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Tyler Thigpen on Tuesday – and Carolina Panthers.
Those teams either lost their starting quarterback to injury or aren’t satisfied with their starter.
Still, don’t rule it out down the road if Garcia fails to catch on with another team right away and Russell’s struggles continue for another week or two.
Garcia knows Oakland’s offense, lives in California and would welcome a return if he was promised a shot at starting at some point this season.

Raider Nation would welcome you with open arms Garcia!!! Come on back to the dark side!!!
RE-SIGN GARCIA!!! BENCH JaBUST!!!
Im not as optimistic as you my friend! Gradkowski is as good!and can see down feild without Jumping! LMAO!
BRILLIANT!
Bring in the guy who lost his last game to the JaMarcus Russell led Oakland Raiders!
BRILLIANT!
I think that Gradkowski would be a better option at this point. If Garcia had had a full training camp then I would say absolutely re-sign him, but he was injured, and he didn’t look that good against back up defenses in the preseason. Gradkowski however has touch and accuracy, has been on the team longer to learn the system and develop a better rapport with the receivers.
All that being said, Russell will still start for now. There’s no way that AD is gonna let Cable change Qbs at this point.
raidered i am happy to hear you finally come to your senses guy. i am still waiting for jr to prove me wrong and i will take back everything i said if he does.
Before they bring in Garcia or even think about that, why not give Gradkowski a shot????
If they’ve even thinking about bringing in Garcia, that means they know there’s an issue. If you know there’s an issue, why not take action to mitigate/eliminate the issue, based on the resources you have?
All these Raider execs who “are committed to Russell for the longterm” are whackadoo? Since when is today’s NFL about the “longterm?”
By the way, I would consider 7 years in professional sports “the longterm.” Coincidentally, that’s the length of time this abysmal slump has been going on. I’ll call it a “long term” slump.
The organization better hope the fans are as committed to supporting this nonsense team the rest of the season as they are to supporting JaBustus for the “long term.”

Bring in the guy who lost his last game to the JaMarcus Russell led Oakland Raiders!
BRILLIANT!
we were down 24-21 and michael bush set up last 10 points by running the ball down tb’s throat. jr didnt even throw a pass on those last 2 drives. so how is he responsible for the win. he didnt do shit to put us ahead! what a fuckn idiot.
yea give bruce or frye a shot! i dont see how anybody can support jr after he has flipped off fans and disrespected them in the parking lot after last game. wtf have we ever done for except for some buy his piece a shit jersey.
BRILLIANT!!!!!!commitment to exellence, you got it all wrong, just because one team beats another one does not mean the winning QB is better, Garcia has one more games in a season than offthemarkus Russell has one in 3 years, not that I’m all for Garcia to come back, this is just my opinion, Sanchez’s Jets beat the Patriots last weekend, is Sanchez overall better than Brady, don’t think so…. GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I meant has won more games in a season, maybe in 1/2 a season….admit that JaFATus sux!!!!!
Oh damn, thsi could be trouble,..all I want is Russell to be allowed to start every game for the next 10 years,…that will ensure the poor crybaby Raider fans will continue to cry every sunday,..please Garcia, do not return, you want no part of that mess,…let them keep playing Russell,….and while Im laughing all day sunday, you Raider fans are crying all day. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
I don’t get you people. Why the hell do we keep bringing up that JR beat Garcia in his last game as a Buc? The last time I checked, the Raiders played the Bucs that day, not JR vs. Garcia. That’s like saying you’d rather have Mark Sanchez because he beat Tom Brady a few weeks ago. So you people, shhh. As for Garcia, what on earth do we have to lose by signing him? Don’t tell me it would stunt JR’s growth because clearly he’s having a hard time right now as it is. You need to develop these young WR’s before you can hand this offense over to an even more immature gunslinger. Say we have a team that likes to stretch the field, really? The only time we stretch it is on punts. We can’t pass the ball therefore the running game is a moot point when they stack 9 guys in the damn box. Garcia can hit the slant routes, outs, and posts better than JR, just face it. He needs to come in and develop this offense while JR keeps learning because come on guys, he hasn’t lived up to ONE expectation any of you have had.
Bring him back ,garcia is a leader something the raiders need the man has heart ! That’s what we need gradkowski is good ,but is he a leader that’s the question ? Garcia if he throws a pick won’t just walk off the field like nothing happen “like russell does ” ! Garcia gets pissed and throws his helmet ! When our rookie WR score he’ll be there in there face pumped up ! That’s the kind of guy that guys want to play for someone who wants to win ! J RUSS is a Bust! ,bring back Garcia let him lead and let gradkowski learn from him !

Gradkowski needs to start for us if we want to finish 8-8! I think coach Cable wants to bench JA-BUST but cant cuzz big Al wont let him. All these BITCH-ASS charger fans seem to agree with me,if we had a decent Q-B fools would scared!!!
good post spooky. tired of hearing that uneducated belief that jbust one that game himself. he didnt.
i really hope they bring jeff back, but if not, they put gradkowski in. anybody but jbust. grad and frye would have to try pretty hard to be worse than russ.
well..cable might leave the door open but…what does Jeff think?
put gradowski in!! didn’t we keep him and fry for a reason? IF jbust is in a slump let him work it out on the bench and prove his way on the field
lol destroy soooo true! it takes effort to be as bad as russell
SIGN HIM NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
I hear Jeff George is still working out.
thanx destroysd! some of these posts on here are as ridiculous as the broncos being 3-0.
wud up spooky. good to hear some good take on jus how bad russel is. make all the lame ass excuses u want for him. hes never guna get better. jus sit his lazy ass back and make dat money. and for all u that keep talking about him having rookie wrs. well first off the qb makes the recievers.period. so that means russel makes our wrs play like shit. i heard the rookie wr excuse about when we played horrible agaisnt the chiefs. well funny how the next week the chiefs went to philly against a qb making his second start with a rookie rb startin a rookie wr and a 2nd yr wr. and they lit the chiefs ass up!!
Garcia or NO-Garcia..it doesnt really matter. Just BENCH JAMARCUS. He’s not playing well and there are no signs of improvement from week to week. If it really is a problem with the WRs, fine..lets make sure it is by letting someone else start at QB. It doesnt matter who it is. I dont see how a quick dump off to McFadden where the ball lands at his foot is the WR’s problem. Nor do I see how a wide open Zach Miller has a ball fly 10 feet over his head is a WR problem either. But for the sake of argument, fine. Put in a different QB and lets see if the shitty offense we have grown to accept is still as shitty. I’m tired of going to games and having the only reason to cheer be 1)awesome defensive play for the first 2 quarters since after that they are tired as hell from playing the whole damn game, 2)a measly first down which happens once per quarter. I want to cheer for TDs!!
I really wish things were different too like the rest of the nation. I wish our #1 franchise QB was working hard and improving every game. I wish the #1 draft pick this year at WR was another point to prove the league wrong about the decision to grab him and show all the critics that the Raiders know what they are doing. The fact is DHB cant find a way to get open and make a reception. Jamarcus is playing like shit. MAKE A CHANGE!!! Why is that so complicated?!!? Lets do what it takes to JUST WIN BABY!! Even the SD game where Jamarcus hit Miller with 3 receptions, if you look at the replays, its the SAME play over and over again!! I wish Jamarcus was good, but he’s not.
I SAW AL DAVIS at the Raider game this past weekend. He got out of his white car near the ticket stand and told a few of us outside that “We are going to stick with Jamarcus. He’s our QB. If anyone criticizes Jamarcus, he is criticizing the Raiders and he is criticizing the Raider Nation and that means criticizing YOU (meaning all of us standing in front of him) and that includes some former members of our organization”. Thats pretty much what he was saying. UGLY. Can we do what it takes to WIN rather than talk shit about our last good QB who won league MVP in Silver and Black? Can we JUST DO WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN!?
just win al, its your motto, now just do it
Doubleo why are we the only ones that see that? first off thank god for gannon. he took our raiders on his back with cosiderably “old” recievers and look what he did. he was a damn good field general out there and jumped players asses when they didnt come out there and give it there all! im like you. id like garcia to sign again but on the other hand just do what any other team would do when ur qb is playing like horse shit and not even giving a damn..just bench him. put in grad and lets evaluate the rest of the team then. we just need a spark. week 1 showed us how good the team can play when theres a reason to play. how in the hell can u maintain a high level out there when one of the highest played players and ultimately the guy that can def decide the outcome of a game doesnt give a shit
“We haven’t talked about it at this point,”Cable said….. That just means Al hasn’t given him the OK to even think about it… Al runs this team and thats why we are still running a 70’s playbook on offense and defense… “theres a can al.. Kick it”… LOL
Silly question: If JaMarcus isn’t ready, why is he playing? He needs to sit, watch, and learn like everyone else who isn’t ready. Walker can’t get open so he doesn’t play? JaMarcus can’t pass accurately, but he does play? That makes sense!
am faldavis i might look like a swampthing .i ..some people called me that..listen you all fn raider fans tom is my pr guy not the coach get it right. i called the plays into russell skull thru the wirelss head set…that qb is too dumb to call his plays anyway..and i call the defense formations as well..got got .f u all fans
how about talking Gannon into coming out of retirement. he is probably more accurate than jabigmac even after retirement!!!
Ecoute bebe…
Come back, baby come back……
