OAKLAND RAIDERS VS. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
GAME: Nov. 1, 2009.
TEAMS: Oakland Raiders vs. San Diego Chargers
COACHES: Raiders: Tom Cable (2nd season, 6-13 career record); Chargers: Norv Turner (12th season, 80-98).
2008 RECORDS: Raiders 5-11 (3rd AFC West); Chargers 8-8 (1st).
SITE: Qualcomm Stadium.
TIME: 1:05 p.m.
TV: CBS.
HISTORY: The Raiders lead the all-time series 55-43-2. However, the Chargers have won the past 12 meetings going back to the 2003 season, including a 24-20, come-from behind win in the regular-season opener Sept. 14 at the Oakland Coliseum.
KEY PLAYERS: – QB JaMarcus Russell, RB Justin Fargas, CB Nnamdi Asomugha, DL Richard Seymour, LB Thomas Howard, LB Kirk Morrison, TE Zach Miller, WR Louis Murphy and P Shane Lechler. San Diego – QB Philip Rivers, RB LaDainian Tomlinson, RB Darren Sproles, WR Vincent Jackson, TE Antonio Gates, LT Marcus McNeill, LB Shawne Merriman, LB Shaun Phillips, CB Antonio Cromartie and P Mike Scifres.
WHAT’S AT STAKE: Plenty for both teams. For the Raiders, they realize their time is now, with never on deck. The Raiders already are 3 ½ games behind the division-leading Denver Broncos (6-0) and fresh from the worst home loss in franchise history, 38-0 to the New York Jets. Another loss to the Chargers would put the Raiders in a position where they likely would need to win their final eight games to have any kind of shot at making the playoffs for the first time in seven seasons. That’s a tall order for a team that hasn’t won more than five games since 2002. So, the Raiders have to do better than “close” against the Chargers, as they were in the teams’ first game and several other games, according to Cable. They have to find a way to beat a team that they haven’t defeated in more than six years, on the road, at a time when not much is going well. The Chargers need a win so that they can stay within striking distance of the Broncos in their quest to defend their AFC West title.
GAME PLAN: It used to be that the key to beating the Chargers was limiting the effectiveness of Tomlinson and Sproles in the running game, first and foremost. No more. The Chargers are 31st in the league in rushing, as they have morphed into a pass-first offense that uses the run only as a change-of-pace tactic and not as a staple. That doesn’t mean the Raiders can ignore the run. Tomlinson and Sproles still are dangerous with the ball in their hands, and the Raiders are 30th in average yards allowed rushing, including 316 against the Jets last Sunday. As Cable said, the Raiders would be naïve to think that the Charges won’t try to run against a Raiders defense that allows an average of 169.7 yards rushing this season. Even if the Raiders succeed in containing Tomlinson and Sproles, the Chargers are well equipped to make things happen in the passing game. Rivers is among the league leaders in passing, Gates one of the league’s top tight ends and Jackson and Chris Chambers reliable receivers. The Raiders offense is last in the league in yards per game and second-to-last in scoring. However, they are bolstered by the fact that their best all-around game came against the Chargers in the opener. And the Chargers now are without All-Pro defensive tackle Jamal Williams. So, the Raiders need to attack the Chargers in the same manner that they did the first time around, with Fargas and Michael Bush handling the workload rushing the ball, rookie receiver Murphy and Miller the focal point of the passing attack and Russell rebounding from being benched last season.

let’z go RUSSELL!!!
I’m feeling a win tomorrow, got nothing to back that up but somehow, I feel a win. Raiderssss fo’ever!
Im not so hopeful but still will be watching the game hoping to see some good things and feel good again. If not, I will again be suffering, not understanding whats going on with us. In the end I will be there hoping we win. If not, I still will be there after the bye.
a win in SD tomorrow would be huge, lets hope Russell learned how to read this week.
raiders will come outwith a win this week.
if we blitz, the game will be within 10 points.if we don’t blitz,it will be a blowout.AL DAVIS ,i’m sure is still mad that we blitzed against the Eagles, when he was away at the league meetings and arrived just before the game.how else would you explain NOT BLITZING A ROOKIE QB,THAT JUST THREW 5 INTS. THE WEEK BEFORE.no one can run the ball, every play, the whole game.AL DAVIS has a limited vocabulary, around 15 words total.here’s some that he knows well.YOUNG/CAP/BASE/MAN/FAST/GREAT/MAN/PLAY/MILLIONS/MAN/CAP/YOUNG/MAN.
I’LL BET THOSE THREE CANADIAN NICKELS THAT WE ALL ARE SAVING,FOR SOME REASON,THAT OUR FIRST OFFENSIVE PLAY IS A REVERSE WITH DHB.
10/26/09-10/31/09,repeating the same bull, over and over.
11/01/09-knocking some SD a**,out for a couple weeks.
the raiders put five SD’s on light duty, the first game,i’ll take the loss just to put some more fear in them.i’m waiting for MIKE MITCHELL to ring a bell or two.old raider football,FLAGRANT FOULS,DRUNK,SPITTING,BITING,of course punching,HEAD SWATTING,STIFF ARMS TO THE FACE-NOT THE MASK,DIRT IN THE EYES,AND TALKING ABOUT YOUR MAMA AND YOUR UGLY WIVE THAT YOU HAD SEX WITH LAST NIGHT.that’ll stop the boo’s.
sunday church in the morning, crime in the afternoon-Seymour.
AL please let our Defense Blitz and play Zone coverage ,if so it will be a close game if we play man on man like AL loves we will get destroyed and our defense will be on the field all game!
I hope Shawnee Merryfag puts a hurt on Jabustus’ left knee cap the very first play of the game, leaving the game in the hands of Bruce or Frye, that’s the only chance we have at winning the game, a QB with a quicker release, a comment from Sam Farmer, ” I don’t know if there’s a worst starting QB in the NFL than JaMarcus Russell, If there is his name is Derek Anderson”—– If I was Anderson, I would sue Sam Farmer, But anyways, that’s a shame, GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear JaBustus, I will be waiting for you by halftime, with your binnie and a gatorade, we could watch the game together…..signed ; THE BENCH.
Just heard women are coming out now saying Cable beat them up also on ESPN of course. I think it’s his ex wives saying it. More trouble for Cable which may help us get rid of him, maybe he will take JR with him!
I seen Barkley(USC)Headfake,Pumpfake, lookoff safteys,Read progressions(the whole field)more times in the first half than JR has in three years. The guy is a true freshmen. This season has long since been over.Do you guys ever remember getting blown out this many times in one season? How about half a season? No I’d like to see Khalif Barnes Develope at right takle,Huff get better,DHB(He’s going to be here a while or I wouldn’t waste time with this bust)learn how to catch,JR Well,,,nevermind.Yes just like the rest of you I’m still Hopping for a mirachal.Maybe see a spark or something.
Also can’t believe we won’t be giving Grad an entire game to show JR how to run the offense. As long as JR is leading us, we will fail to put up points and leave the defense to be tired out by halftime. Look for more nagging “injuries” to come up for more starters after this one.
Just tell Cable the Chargers are a group of women and he’ll take it upon himself to beat them on his own. What a POS. This jerk needs to have been fired yesterday.
Absolutely Pizza Man, he’s proven already that he isn’t qualified for the position.
quit doggin on cable just because Al controls everything, Cable is working his ass off for this organization trying to win. While Al is calling all the shots saying PLAY MAN DEFENSE. PLAY JAMARCUS! HES MY HOMEY BLABLABLA fucking piece of shit, Jamarcus sux , put in gradkowski and save us all a little embarassment. Ps Cables ex wives probly deserved it. haha
Oh that’s sooooo funny. You’re just as big a loser as Cable is if you believe that crap.
TOTALLY OFF THE SUBJECT BUT EVERY RECEIVER CHOSEN AFTER HEWARD BEY IN THE FIRST TWO TO FOUR ROUNDS THAT HAS PLAYED AS MANY SNAPS HAS BETTER NUMBERS EVEN ON HIS OWN TEAM IN MURPHY!! CRABTREE HAS TRIPLED HIS CATCHES IN TWO GAMES GOOD JOB AL!!
