PRACTICE REPORT WEDNESDAY (12-23-09)

The big news from practice is the announcement that quarterback Charlie Frye has recovered from the big hit he took in the fourth quarter of the win over the Denver Broncos. Frye passed all the tests required of players that suffer a concussion and was able to fully practice with the team on Wednesday.

“Charlie Frye will be the starting quarterback,” Coach Tom Cable announced.

Frye goes home to Cleveland with a chance to show up the team that cut him.  Frye was drafted by the Browns and played in 21 games before he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks.  As fate would have it he is starting against quarterback Derek Anderson the player that replaced him.  The Browns starting quarterback Brady Quinn was put on injured reserve earlier this week and is done for the season.

“I hope that pattern stays intact but I think it means more to that person,” Cable said of the opportunity for Frye to beat Cleveland. “It certainly has shown that already, and Charlie will be excited to go back to Cleveland, no question.”

The weatherman is calling for snow in Cleveland on Sunday. Cable has addressed the team about the weather but does not think that it is the overriding factor that others make it out to be. Because both teams are more comfortable running the ball the wind and the snow are less of a factor.  Just last week the Raiders and the Browns both ran for more yards than they threw for in winning efforts.

“We’ve talked about and addressed that issue,” Cable said about the weather. “We have to be able to go out and do what we do and just accept the fact that it’s going to be snowing and blowing and all those things and it is what it is – both teams gotta play in it – so I think the fact that we’ve addressed it already and it is what it is and we’ve got to go win a game.”

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan now coaches with Cleveland. Ryan spent the last five years coaching with the Raiders. Ryan still has many friends on the team and even called linebacker Kirk Morrison to tell him, “It’s bedlam, it’s on!” Cable does not think  the Raiders will have  much of an advantage from having spent all that time with coach Ryan.

“Well, extremely different,” Cable said when describing the defense the Ryan runs for the Browns. “You’re talking about seven-man-front football and eight-man-front football. They will pressure you. He’s got a lot of different types of pressures that he’s kind of known for. So, you have to prepare for all those kind of things. But just the structure, in general, from how they line up up front and their coverage structure, all that’s different.”

NOTES:

Running back Justin Fargas is day to day with a knee injury, he did not practice today.

Tight end Zach Miller has no more symptoms related to his concussion and is feeling better.   He passed the required tests and was able to practice limited today. The Raiders are being cautious with him, it is his second concussion this season.

Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski did not practice today but is improving a great deal and could be ready for the Baltimore game next week.

Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey did not practice, kick returner Nick Miller did not practice, right guard Cooper Carlisle practiced limited, tight end Brandon Myers did not practice, defensive end Greg Ellis did not practice; cornerback Chris Johnson practiced limited.

  3. Oak14nd says:

  4. ernie72 says:

Run Bush Run, mix it with Fargas, put McFadden to catch a couple of passes, the D stops the run , special teams slow down Josh Cribbbs and oh, wait, keep JaWuzz off the field, stay healthy Charlie……….Raiders 23 Browns 17

  5. ernie72 says:

Snow and wind boys and Frye manages a good game. Raiders 17-14 Ernie, Fargas has not practiced at all, he is still hurting…Per the Article we just read.

Of course Ryan runs a different scheme D, he no longer has to comply with meddling Al dictating the style. I know we sacrifice the draft pick, but would love to end the season on a 3 game run and build some positives for the off season. I think Bush will start, since Fargas tentative and field conditions might negate DMC’s speed. Cribbs + poor ST coverage could be nerve racking. What about Barnes at LT and move Henderson to right for the remaining two, what a waste of money with no return, and Mario has been a turnstile the last two games. Bonus- Cornell”False Start” Green would be out of the game and we could assess for offseason.

That’s great that Frye is ready to go! I kept praying please god don’t let it be Russell. Even after he led us to victory last week at Denver. That was pure luck if you ask me! He did everything he could to screw that drive up,but for some reason it didn’t happen.Just glade it’s not him starting this week! I hope the weather dosen’t present too much of a problem for them though. We need Bush to step up again with a big game! Merry Christmas everyone, and GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. runraiderrun says:

cornell green seems to only go offsides when JR is QBing.i hope Langston Walker is at left guard and the run plays go to his side.Henderson is decent at run blocking.i’m also hoping that the raiders try to run the ball more than pass in this game, assuming the weather will be bad.

  11. raiderkid76 says:

i think the raider d has to change from man-man scheme especially cuz of ryan who knows exactly how run it. we need to use marshalls defensive game plan and then we have a huge shot at winning. Go Raiders and A Merry Christmas Raider Nation!

  12. RaiderEd says:

Merry Christmas Raider Nation, may you all have a Silver and Black Christmas. GO RAIDERSSSSSS!!!!!!!

  13. Oak14nd says:
