RaiderBeat.com Staff Report
Tom Cable made it through Monday without incurring the wrath of managing general partner Al Davis. It appears as if he’s going to make it to Wednesday, at least.
Cable and Davis are scheduled to meet this week. That much we know, given Cable and the Raiders said as much. It’s the when, how long and about what that no one outside of Cable and Davis seems to know.
In the absence of definitive word from the Raiders about Cable’s job security beyond the current day, national sites are throwing out rather curious mentions of potential replacements for Cable if he gets fired.
NFL.com reported Tuesday that the Raiders “could be interested” in Green Bay Packers linebackers coach Winston Moss if there’s a vacancy. Then again, the Raiders could not be interested.
Davis interviewed Moss last year, when he was contemplating whether to stick with Cable or turn to someone else such as Moss, New York Giants offensive coordinato Kevin Gilbride or Jim Fassel.
Moss played linebacker for the Raiders, and he is a well-regarded coach. Moss seeminly would have a better shot at landing an assistant’s job based on Davis’ track record of hiring offensive-minded people for the head coaching spot.

Keep Cable and say no to Kevin Gilbride, who was fired as the OC of the Giants. Fassel just wants to get back in the league, ask him if he wants to become OC. And Winston Moss can come in as a LB coach, because our LB obviously need to learn to play like Winston did in his good ole days with my Raiders back in the day. Winston was a solid player.
Well said…
Who even cares anymore.
Why don’t we wait until the first pre-season game to see what kind of drama unfolded in the off-season with the soap opera Raiders and their owner.
Cable and Davis just want to be relevant in the media behind closed doors because they are insignificant on the playing field. They both know when this meeting is going down but they choose (Al Davis) to enquiring minds at bay.
It’s like Al Davis is keeping Raider fans hostage.
Screw Al Davis and his 102 year old genes.

Al Davis is a Jerry Jones wannabe.
Al Davis is a Jerry Jones wannabe..
Technically Jerry Jones is an Al Davis wannabe since Al is older.
Not when Al’s mind has regressed.
Why is every decision that Al Davis makes a gamble?
‘Cause he’s a “MAVERICK” (Sarah Palin)
Also, Jerry Jones has more toys than Al.
Stadium, playoff team, QB, OL, DL, coach, OC, freakin’ mascot.
I wannabe Jamarcus Russell, fat, lazy and rich bitch.
2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
My bet is Cable stays.
Davis is a player’s owner, and the players seem to want Cable back.
Can anyone reading this remember a time when the players wanted the coach and Davis let the coach go? I can’t. Art Shell maybe.
Rausch, Madden, and Flores resigned. The players hated Shanahan, and Shanahan wasn’t ready to coach- gone.
Shell had enough time and not enough results- gone.
I don’t remember any Mike White fanclubs in the locker room.
Davis wanted to hire Gruden, but the players wanted Bugel. So they got Bugel; then they didn’t want Bugel and he was gone.
Gruden got traded, and Callahan was hated two years later.
Just because I don’t remember it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, but I don’t remember this kind of support for a coach this decade (the first I followed the team on the internet)
My bet is Cable stays…for now
Excellent post by timbrown4ever. Don’t need to add anything to that. So….I won’t…..

It pains me seeing this civil war going on n da NATION.But I do not like how sum of u bash on our godfather.Sure he aint handling bizness like we would luv but remember, this franchise is his baby and evry1 want him 2 just LET sum1 come n & raise it.If anythng, u know how he feels bout loyalty.Dat takes time & trust. We only need a good OC to use our Offense da rite way, make good pix(not 4 speed but talent @ position),fix BOTH lines(to make bettr runs & stop’em on other side).I like Cable’s energy. If N.Miller had been healthy we woulda had our own little Wes Welker.Heyward-Bey a PR/KR.SILVER&BLACK4LIFE
Don’t be surprised if Davis keeps Cable wiggling in the wind until after the Superbowl. This way he can observe which coaches he might be able to lure away. Nobody with too strong a will mind you. That wouldn’t work. Davis needs someone inexperienced enough to do what he is told.
Davis also can make a bigger splash if he holds off until after the big game.
The bigger question is what is Jamarcus’ potential. We saw some glimses of talent in the Baltimore game, but we also saw the inexperience which comes from not being coached on what to to protect the ball.
He desperately needs someone to come in and evaluate if he truly has potential or will never be any better than he has been this season.
If Cable stays, he’ll need better surrounding help than he had in 2009.
This is not necessarily what I want to see happen, but If I was a betting man, I’d say Cable stays.
Davis has always proven to be loyal to those that Bleed silver & Black. Cable still really wants the job and hopefully this upcoming meeting is to sit down and discuss what tools Cable needs in his tool chest to improve in 2010.
He definitely needs better surrounding help.
I’ll give Cable 1 more year and hope that an improved record comes from consistency and better surrounding help.
How about speculating that Al is going to hire a GM…. See the Ball. Be the Ball. If you say it enough times and believe it long enough, it will happen, right?
Wonder if Al can trade the this years #1 for another pro Bowl caliber player from NE? At least that way Al wouldn’t F#$% up another high draft pick and pay 30 more million to another bust.
Personally I would give Cable another year, with JR on the bench or gone( not likely). Give him a full season with his choice of QB. He does need an OC, but you cannot question his passion for everything Raider. Good news for Tom, every outlet has him going, which Al may snub his nose to and in spite keep him. Working against him may be the players backing him because he may pull a power play to show who is in charge and popularity doesn’t have a place in Al’s head. Plus it would be giving Cable credit as opposed to Al recieving it. How is the locker room goinig to react to Cable gone and JR starting? Problem is Al only cares what Al thinks.
Cable needs to go to Al’s office and tell him that if Russell stays - he’s gone. Give Al an ultimatum and role with the consequences. Man up, look Davis in the eyes, and state your case. If he throws an old man tantrum - so be it. No one needs to put up with poor management. If Russell stays, the team is doomed regardless of who the coach is. Al needs to be told off some kinda bad. I will not root for another team, but I will laugh at the Raiders like the rest of the world until common sense prevails.
why do the raiders need to announce that Cable is staying as HC,he is under contract another 3 years.don’t be suprised if there isn’t a peep out of the raiders,in the near future.
what would happen with JR,if the raiders assemble a near probowl o-line,this offseason?
@ agent3
The players wanted to keep Norv Turner and Al canned him. Wouldn’t suprise me to see Cable go. I like the guy I think he has what it takes to make it happen here. Maybe hire an OC and let Cable worry about other things and get someone that can run an offense. If we don’t shore up the OL we could get Dungy in here as HC, Cower as DC and Air Correal as OC and still would lose. If the QB can’t go through his reads without getting his head taken off you don’t stand much chance of winning.
I agree with oldschoolraider that something needs to change.
Either give Cable some help and let him pick his players or let him go.
JRuss doesn’t have to be released if he takes a pay cut by means of restructuring his contract. He’s shown signs of life in several games but needs help reading defenses and getting rid of the ball when necessary.
Give Cable the chance to evaluate 3 qbs and make his choice after camp is done.
and yes, a better OL with a Healthy Gallery would solve plenty of issues. Hopefully we don’t trade “Mediocre at best” Centers again with another team. With number 8 we should grab the best Offensive Tackle available.
It sounds like Cable’s fate hinges on one thing. The one horrible thing we all feared. Is Cable willing to swallow his pride, ignore every football instinct he posesses and go forward with JaMarcus Russell as his starting QB. If he is,he will most likely keep his job. I hope that is not the case, but that sounds like it may be where Al is coming from.
I don’t know maybe it’s just me, but looks like Cable has the balls to tell Mr Davis that it will be my way or fire me, well basically, I think Al needs someone to stand up to him, Cable already stepped up by benching JaLard, but Mr Davis is very unpredictable, who knows maybe Cable stays, I hope so, lets get a run stopping guy, and a vet WR, just heard KC signed Crennel as DC, at this pace we will be last next season.
Al Davis a Jerry Jones wannabe? We should be so lucky! Jeez Al! hurry up already! How long are you gonna drag this out! Either fire Cable now or let him get on with doing his job!
If it were up to me I’d keep Cable and fire Al Davis!
I think runraiderrun said it best. Cable is still under contract so a decision, if any, does not have to be made and everyone will continue to hang by a thread on the word of Al Davis.
Just the way the old fart likes it.
Winston Moss is the new Lofton - Al’s Rooney Rule qualifier. If he has interviewed him, he is at least thinking about making a change.
Even if a pro-bowl quality OL is assembled, JR would still suck. Even when he is at his best (which is rare), he throws darts. He does not understand the concept of arcs and trajectory. I guess he didn’t take Trigonometry at LSU huh? I’m not saying he has to be a rocket scientist, but this limits him to two dimensional throws. This shows he has the mind of a child. Releasing JR is addition by subtraction. Nothing would improve the team more drastically, and more quickly than that simple move.
