RaiderBeat.com Staff Report
Raiders managing general partner Al Davis and coach Tom Cable are running out of week to meet after Wednesday came and went without the much-anticipated face-to-face taking place.
Raiders senior executive John Herrera confirmed earlier this week that the meeting still is in the works. When is up to Davis, and he isn’t talking for publication or otherwise.
Cable was spotted at the team’s Alameda, Calif., facility Monday. Several reports said Davis was there Tuesday night. Now it’s a matter of getting both of them on site at the same time, in the same room and prepared to hash out whether Davis wants Cable back for a second full season.
Most reports still project Cable as a long-shot to return for a second full season. He replaced Lane Kiffin four games into the 2008 season and was made the full-time coach by Davis soon after the ’08 season ended.

the question is WHY IS EVERYONE GUESSING? coach cable is still under contract. that means he still is the coach…..period. did uncle al say he wasnt????? stop all the f##king hate and get off the raider d**k stop tring to bring the nation down with all this “so called” disfunction
go follow the buffalo heffers job. a team that actually has a head coach vacancy

Who cares?
Okay so I don’t get it….we all know a new coach is comin, for God’s sake it’s January. And that means a new coach in Raiderland just like we do every year at this time. I thought this was just part of the yearly events like free agency, the draft, mini camp. You know it’s January….time to shop for a new coach. Way to go Al.
“So Called Dysfunction,” are you joking? As long as we have fans like raiderbyrdgang, refusing to see that the Raiders are the laughing stock of the NFL, and the very definition of dysfunction, we will lose 10 games a year until the end of time. It’s sickening to see what has happened to this great organization, and shameful to see the ignorant behavior of the trash who call themselves fans.
Something has to be done in the way of change. The chiefs have already hired crennel & weiss becoming the patriots west, denver even though faltered towards the end started off hot and the chargers are off to lose another afc championship game. I say we take drastic measures. Hire Cowher or Billic whatever it takes!! Joe Bugel is proof enough not to keep a coach just because the players “like” him.
Raider83 gets it! Unbelievable! There sure doesn’t seem to be too many who can figure it out. It’s hard to believe there are people who assume Cable deserves another year, then justify it by blaming Russell. It was Cable who refused to bench Russell and still imagines DHB was worth a starting position until one of his own teammates had to hurt him to get his sorry ass out of the lineup. Russell has regressed so far under Cable’s tutaledge it’s hard to belive he was the same QB who’d finished last year under the coach’s Kiffin hired looking like he might actually become the QB Al Davis imagined when he drafted the now semimingly bust Cable’s created with the overall #1 pick. The same Cable, supposed O-line guru, who’s O-lines have been the NFL’s most penalized for years. The same Cable, who’s O-line took a top ten rushing team of the past two years to the 21st rushing team this season. The same guy who’s game plans made the Browns, Chiefs, and Redskins look like major NFL playoff teams against his Raiders. The same Cable who’s .239 winning percentage in college gives those fans the reasoning that he deserves another years at the helm of the Raiders. Oh yeah, he deserves the job because of all of the above he’s done in his career and for the Raiders. Damn, I wish I could find people like that to hire me.
Oh God, now Mariucci is in rumors to replace Cable, who’s next? please Al, come clean, address the media and let us have it, is he going or staying?
Raider83 and Pizzaman, go suck a bronco c**k. The reason we have dysfunction is because of people who think like you do. how will we know if we can turn things around if we start from square one every season. everyone knows davis chooses the players in the draft and would not let cable bench russel until at least mid season. cable has the support of everyone on that team that actually works to be great atheletes so that should tell you something. Just because you were picked number one does not guarantee a starting role. you have to work for it. it’s obvious to everyone else who the problem is and it’s not cable or even davis cause last time i checked they don’t play the game
CABLE FOR 2010!!!

I hope we keep Cable. I just know that we need a offensive coordinator. Cable as a play-caller wasn’t that great or even average.
It’d make it easier for him to focus on the OLine.
irjonny24, although you exemplify the classless fans I speak of, I agree with you. We should absolutely keep Cable, and we should keep Russell too. We have to stop the bleeding, but no one can seriously tell me that this whole organization isn’t a complete mess, and i’m sick of the people who ignorantly act like the Raiders are the are this unbelievable franchise, who are the victims of some world wide conspiracy. We have sucked for a decade, we were good for a few years, but guess what? we sucked for the entire decade before that too. The Raiders problems start at the top and filter down. The Raiders need a lot of things to happen, unfortunately, as long as Al Davis is breathing, I wouldn’t count on it. We will continue to look like amateurs in a league of professionals.
hire billick. oh, and a GM wouldn’t hurt either.
hire Billick as the G.M.sign Jeff Tedford as the O.C. and assistant head coach.bring Tedfords’ DB coaches and assistants’ to the raiders because UCAL. is doing something that other big name schools don’t do and that is coach their players to be NFL ready.CAL.seems to not worry about winning too much and seems to care about the players more. DeSean Jackson,Marshean Lynch,Asomugha…also draft TYSON ALUALU,he will be the best surprise of the draft!you heard it here first!
i heard that Mark Davis is the type of person who is more player friendly than coach friendly.reading into that more,AL is the same.if and when AL retires,a constant G.M. would need to be in place at all times.
with the hiring of LANCE Kiffin at USC,does that mean the raiders will not draft anyone after this year from USC?
gary russell,jay richardson,stanford routt,jon alston,jonathon holland,tony stewart,luke lawton;gone by training camp?
In between fumbles and interceptions Russell shows a glimse every now and then of why we drafted him.
His play against the Ravens actually looked half way decent. He threaded several passes between defenders.
I would hope the Raiders would see if he could restructure his contract, put in pay bonuses based on keeping in shape and passing rating and get him some help on reading defenses and ball control. As for the attitude, he’s on his own with that. He’s got to take responsibility for his mistakes.
If he doesn’t improve, then fine, release him.
Don’t get me wrong, I was not his biggest fan this year by any means, but I’d hate to see him improve with some other team that took the time to get the best out of him.
Look at Vince Young. He stunk his first year. He sat and watched and learned and when he came in this year he actually looked much better.
His coach said the year he learned from the sidelines helped him with reading defenses and getting rid of the ball quicker.
I would think the same should be done with Cable. Give him the tools he needs to succeed and if it doesn’t pan out, release him next year. It would be nice if we could get through a year without a beat-up/patched-up line and see what our RB’s can really do.
That would also go a long way to helping our passing game too.
Draft some Offensive linemen and shore it up.
Hire a good offensive play caller to get the most out of our team.
Al is loving the attention his delay is causing. Always one to keep his Raiders in the spotlight even when they are not football relevent. Hire the GM you alluded to and were in the works to bring in 2(?) ago. Let this individual lead the offseason moves and decide if he wants Cable to remain. If it were up to the players ( the real ones that count), then he would remain. I think he deserves another year without owner meddling into who starts ( JR, DHB ). Sorry gang, I don’t see it with JR. More the responsibility of Hackett and Tollner than Cable, though the play calling doesn’t help. JR just does not seem to have the mentality or temperment to succeed. I believe I heard the playbook is still scaled back for his play. He appears overwhelmed and unaware when dropping back. No pocket presence or athleticism to escape or step up and avoid-basic QB 101. Every time he drops back, I fear the sack, fumble, incomplete,or interception.Keep Cable, hire the GM and OC. Draft McClain, adapt 3-4 ,FA nose, and OL in 2,3,3.( got to admit,Gerhart, though not a priority, would look great at FB).
memo to all raider fans that want a gm. raiders have one already his name al davis… hard to believe you fans are willing to give fatass another chance (after three years) here are few things you guys should know by now fatass does not call the right formation protections or read defenses can’t survey the field fast enough his brain works too slow. just looks at the jets sanchez first year playoffs last year n today flacco.
I’m not saying he should be self-anointed just because he makes a huge paycheck. I agree, it looks like a long shot, but I’m merely wondering if he had better coaching, is it possible to salvage something before we move on.
If Al keeps him, he’ll have to compete at a high level to get back in there and re-earn the respect of the team.
I’d like to see another free agent come in and fight for the starting QB job. We’ve got nothing to lose if we can restructure his contract.
The scenario I don’t want to see: He gets picked up by someone like the “Chefs”, gets tutored and observes as a #2 and in a year from now he’s turned around and playing well. It’s happened before.
I think this “meeting” is more to see what Cable needs to fix his toolbox than a firing session.
Please stop with the JR has a chance to turn it around, or he will go to another team and haunt us with his “newfound” ability! No he won’t. He is terrible. He doesn’t have what it takes. He never will. His roster spot is more of a waste than Nick Miller’s was. At least Nick didn’t hurt the team and he has portential. JR doesn’t - never will - period.
Get rid of that fat slob russell. Regardless of who the coach is, nobody is going to win next season with that dumb fat idiot at qb. Can he turn things around? Maybe. BUT it will NOT happen during the offseason. Theres simply not enough time to teach that guy the QB position in a single offseason with no game-time experience. I WANT TO WIN NEXT SEASON. I dont want to see another test, another experiment, another “chance” for that clown. IF, and I say IF, we want to keep Russel and think he can become worthy of his position, let the season start with someone else at QB. When we have a lead, or when we are completely out of the game, THEN give that clown playing time. NOT BEFORE THAT. I dont want to see another 7 games go by before someone has the balls to bench that fat slob.
i agree with irjonny24. things r nevr gonna change if we get a new coaching staff every year. davis needs to reluinqish his duties and hand them over to a gm. let someone with the right mindset make the logical calls. and about cable benching russel, he needed davis’s permition to do it. release russel, save the cap space. and bring in another decent veteran qb that can compete with grad and giv us a fair shot at winning every week. raider fans r some of the most loyal in the country, and we dont deserve this agony davis has put us through. what he has done for the raiders is in the past. time to hand over the reigns.
Silverdog, If you are right, then there is no harm in restructuring his contract and having him compete.
If he makes the same mistakes in camp and shows the same lackluster response then jettison his A@@.
Bring in a veteran to compete with our current group and see who comes out on top. No harm no foul.
Give Cable someone to call plays, improve the offense by bringing in and/or drafting linemen.
There was one other guy who was drafted number one overall, labeled a complete bust because he was on a team with a pretty poor OL…then traded and benched before he was finally released after a 5 win season.
His name… was Plunkett.
I’m not directly comparing JR to Plunkett; but only saying that there often is something of value if you have the right coach to bring it out.
JaPorkass probably makes an average of 2 decent(barely) throws per game. Even some of his completions are thrown off his back foot. He has to restructure his contract and there needs to be an open tryout at QB in training camp. The only other scenario that will work for the Raiders is if he takes a hike. I like the heart we started to show at the end of the season, but that has to be there from the get go. Cable was already interim coach for almost all of last season, so there’s really no excuse for the abysmal way we played in the beginning/middle of the season (chargers game excluded).
Also… Christo, you’re an idiot, but thanks for the laugh. I don’t know what you remember about Vince Young’s first year, but I remember him being Offensive Rookie of the Year and being selected to a Pro Bowl. Lol
