RaiderBeat.com Staff Report
Raiders Pro Bowl punter Shane Lechler was named to the Associated Press All-Pro team for the fifth time in his 10-year career Thursday. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was a glaring omission, bypassed in favor of former Raiders cornerback Charles Woodson and the New York Jets Darrelle Revis.
Lechler averaged 51.1 yards punting this year and came close to eclipsing Sammy Baugh’s NFL record of 51.4, set in 1940. He also is the AFC’s representative for punter in the Pro Bowl later this month.
Asomugha also was selected to the Pro Bowl for the second straight season. However, he failed to repeat as an All-Pro because of the stellar seasons turned in by Woodson and Revis.
Asomugha no doubt was overlooked because he didn’t have the gaudy stats of Woodson and Revis. That should have worked in Asomugha’s favor because he is so good that teams rarely throw his way. He allowed only 13 completions in 16 games this season.
Woodson had nine interceptions and returned three for touchdowns for the Green Bay Packers this season. He also got shoved around and allowed two touchdowns to the Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald in a first-round playoff loss last Sunday.
Also, Revis and Woodson broke up more passes than Asomugha had thrown his way all season.
Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson was the only unanimous choice, based on his 2,006 yards rushing and NFL record for yards from scrimmage.
“That’d be a good thing,” said Johnson, who won the Offensive Player of the Year award Wednesday. “Because I feel like if you put a season out there, out of those dudes who got votes or the dudes who won, I wouldn’t feel they had a better season than I had, and broke as many records in one season that I had.”
Johnson received all 50 votes from a nationwide panel of sportswriters. San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker Patrick Willis fell one vote shy of being unanimous. Woodson, the Defensive Player of the Year, Revis and Lechler received 48 votes each.
The Vikings had the most players on the team with four. The Indianapolis Colts had three. Other veteran All-Pros include Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, chosen for the fifth time, Minnesota guard Steve Hutchinson and Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams and Lechler, all five-time selections.

I can’t believe it!!! but C Wood did have a hell of a season.
Is Chris Johnson gonna race Usain Bolt or what? Heard it on the radio last time.
STOP HATING ON WOODSON!!!!!!!!!!
This dude played great. Both times Fitz scored, the ref should’ve thrown the flag for offensive P.I.
anyways… Asomugha wasn’t robbed or “overlooked.” Blame the coaching staff and/or Al Davis. They could’ve easily matched him up with the teams’ best receiver each game (like Revis did) or moved him all around the secondary like the Pack did with Woodson. It’s easy to avoid a player when he is always in the same area covering your second or third best option. While Asomugha has played lights out for the last three years, Woodson and Revis both could make an excellent case for being the brightest spots on their PLAYOFF teams!
Don’t bash a guy because there are three open spots on the All-Pro teams. Somebody had to be left out. I’d say the guarding Kevin Walter and Jabar Gaffney instead shutting down Andre Johnson and Brandon Marshall will be the one left off… Sorry Nnamdi.
Chris Johnson would get DESTROYED by Usain Bolt on anything longer than maybe 20 yards… anything more than 40 and he’ll blow him out of the water… CJ is a very fast NFL player, but wouldn’t be in the top 20 in USA Sprinters, and Bolt is the fastest man ever on the planet…
As for Asomugha while I hate to say it Woodson and Revis both had to go… Woodson was ridiuclous this year with forced fumbles, TDs and everything else… Revis shut down every top WR in the game. Still next year Asomugha could be back into the All Pro ranks.
Janikowski, I just really hope the Raiders don’t overpay him… He’s good, very solid, but we’re already throwing a TON of money on a punter, if we throw a ton of money on a kicker too we’re spending wayyyyy too much money on our special teams, we have too many glaring weaknesses to pay a kicker the most in NFL history or something.
Thoroughbred Asomugha does end up on the side of the field as the star WR quite often… No he doesn’t change sides like Revis but teams typically don’t move their offense around TOO much to avoid him, last year against Andre Johnson he completely shut him down… Chad Ochocinco this year was against Asomugha more often than not…. It’s not like teams just constantly put their #1 on Chris Johnson, teams run their offenses, and more often than anyone in football Asomugha doesn’t let them catch the ball.
I dont really understand how you can put that Nhamdi got overlooked. I mean come on now, Nhamdi is one of the best in the league but Darrell Revis and Big Chuck did have some pretty good seasons. Revis and C Wood both play the opposing teams best WR’s Nhamdi just plays one side of the field… So he wasnt overlooked or he wasnt outplayed he just doesnt see as many balls as Wood and REvis get. I dont now how you other Raider Fans feel about C Wood but I have no problem saying I wish he was still a raider. Hes still my favorite player in the NFL, and I think the NFL got it right this year for All Pro CB…
Just past 4pm on the east here. McDocald and ESPN already reporting that Herrara said a cable/al meeting is scheduled today and may continue tomorrow.
Maybe you should finish your story by saying that Nnamdi did make the second team which still leaves him in the top three. But why include all the facts. Just going down hill because everyone said they would not pay $10 a month.
Can we not talk about what Asomugha did in 08. This is the 09 All-Pro Team.
I watched a few games.. I try to get to a bar or restaurant and watch what i can, when i can (live in TN and too broke for extra packages on my cable). The games I saw were the Houston, Dallas, and 1st Denver games to name a few. He did a great job on Andre except for when they decided to pick on CJ…. which makes Nmandi ineffective. Miles Austin repeatedly pick us apart on short routes from the slot position… I see C’Wood many times lined up in the nickel position to use his versatility. And did we all not see Captain Kirk out there on Brandon Marshall in the redzone??
he didn’t get overlooked, he got under uses! teams know where he is gonna be every play! the d-coordinators dont use him right. we all know revis will be on the 1 all game long, just watch this weekend against the chargers, he will guard v. jackson all game long. c-wood doesn’t always take the 1, but you never know where he is gonna be at, he gets picks all over the field! aso should go cry to al and tell him, “hey, leave me on the best wr all game, and game paln the d around that”! not knocking aso, but teams are so respectful of him, they dont throw his way that much, I would challenege his butt and make him live up to that respect that i dont really think he deserves! my case in point, the packers kept going after that cb from arizona last week cause he was so weak, the similar situation here, c.j. palyed better year before when he took halls place, but got toasted repeatedly last year, cause teams knew that you attack the weakest spot, not necessarily cause aso was on that side of the field and we dont wanna throw his way! make him earn that 15 million a year by playing him extensively on the other teams 1 all game every game!
Dish Network Deals…
J Russ, do something good before showing up to games looking like a chicken that got caught in a blender….
