RaiderBeat.com Staff Report
Tom Cable finally will get his face-to-face sitdown with Raiders managing general partner Al Davis. The meeting will take place later today, senior executive John Herrera said.
Cable said 10 days ago that the meeting would take place sometime this week. Well, here it is. Herrera said the meeting might be continued Friday, if necessary.
Davis and Cable most assuredly will discuss how to proceed on the heels of another disappointing season and the seeming regression of quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
Cable isn’t confident that Russell gives the Raiders the best chance to win, given Russell’s slower-than-expected development and the sharper play of Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye.
So, Cable and Davis need to reach some common ground on what to do with Russell before they can proceed or else they run the risk of encountering the same issues that dogged them last season.
Several reports in recent weeks said that Davis likely will fire Cable. However, the fact that they are meeting gives reason to believe that Davis still hasn’t made up his mind.

JRUSS IS THE WORST QB PROSPECT I HAVE EVER SEEN. I’M SURE ANY POTENTIAL COACH KNOWS THAT JRUSS IS JUST DEAD WEIGHT AND WILL NOT AGREE TO COACH THE TEAM IF HE HAS TO PLAY JRUSS AT QB. I THINK CABLE HAS SOME LEVERAGE.
ok if cable wants 2 atleast keep Al Davis from leavin that meetin pissed off & ready 2 move on… he better say how he can get RUSSELL better…. even if he think he cant!!!
bring in the mooch!!
Offensive Line?
I was pretty optimistic at the beginning of this year (Football year) with the signing of Pears, Marcus Johnson, Kalif Barnes and the trade for Samson Satele. Besides Satele, all of our pick-ups were garbage. I thought that Barnes and Henderson would compete for LT position. The RT would be Johnson, Pears or loser of LT competition. People hate Cornell Green (well cause he sucks, he is our new Barry Sims), Green is what he is, a backup. Cable brought in guys to replace Green and they were even worse (see above). Cable is also the guy who thought Kwame Harris was a good o-lineman (Currently unemployed?).
Can Cable evaluate offensive line talent?
Could Cable only shop for offensive lineman in the trash-heap of FA?
There is no such thing as leverage when u are dealing with Uncle Al its his way or no way
C’mon Dutch you didn’t really think the donkey’s cut Pears because he was good did you. Every game he played in he got eaten up and blown past. He’s worse than Lame Harris. We need a real personnel department with competent scouts. We really need FOOTBALL players not track stars and bodybuilders.
dont fire the coach, get to the root and fix the problem (fire #2)
tim brown is offering to help the raiders recivers lol im waiting for john to say tim brown needs help….heres what he had to say about russel Q: Your evaluation of JaMarcus Russell?
Brown: When you look at JaMarcus, you know, the Raiders sort of called me unofficially before they drafted him and they asked me what did I think? And I told them then that I didn’t think this guy was a player. I thought it would take three to four years before he developed because I was at that LSU-Notre Dame game and I watched this guy intently warming up and throwing balls before the game and during the game and what I saw was not an NFL quarterback. It was a sandlot player, a guy who can go back there, pat the ball five times and then throw it with that velocity he has in his arm.
But, Rich, you know better than me, you don’t have five pats in the NFL. You’ve got about a pat and a half and then somebody’s about to take your head off. And when he tried to throw the ball on time it came out like a rocket. So I thought it would take significant time for this guy to develop how to drop back and throw the ball, a catchable ball that a receiver could maneuver and go on with. So I’m not surprised what has happened with him. You throw in the fact that, from what I hear, he doesn’t have the great work ethic that every quarterback has to have, that’s going to equal failure in the NFL any day of the week.
Jennings304… I read that same article and I hate when that jackass john Herrea says anything just like everyone else does and Al davis has done some pretty bad things but to say something bad about an All Time Raider Great.. That wont happen. Tim Brown is my eras mister Raider. Hes is just like Jim Otto, Jim Plunkett, and all those other raider greats. I just think that they will listen to what he has to say but wont take him up on his offer. Which I think they should because if they could get Tim Brown in there to coach the young WR’s we got would be such a huge impact. Yall read that article and read what Timmy says about the WR’s on the roster… He knows they lacking that go to Guy and the leadership at that position, if he was there he could turn that around. But it probably wont happen and they will be stuck with sanja lai.. or whatever his nobody name is.
And dutchraider77 obviously you dont know to much football because if you really know who Tom Cable was then you would know that he is one of the best o line coachs in the game. I believe from the 04 season through the 05 season or it might be 05 and 06 season Tom cable had the atlanta falcons as the top rated rushing team. He defintily knows how to evaluate the o line, you just got to have talent there to make it work. I just think the raiders lack good talent across the whole line.
mandm8112, don’t forget that Vick rushed for an NFL record for a QB that year so that alone padded the Falcons #1 rushing status.
Why was Vick running for his life?
Either his line sucked like the current Raiders line does or his receivers couldn’t get open. Matt Ryan has no problem completing passes to his current receiver, most of which were there when Vick was, or having enough time to get the ball off either.
I’m still on the fence with Cable.
Want him to stay for continuity.
Want him gone ’cause he really is shitty.
Can’t play-call, can’t coach the o-line, can’t evaluate talent.
Probably best to start over with a new coach, but a proven coach. No more looking for diamonds in the rough Al. Your not a genius, probably never was either, just lucky.
tired of going through coaches every other year the players play hard for him with a decent QB starting we are a different team he should not be the play caller ..if he gets dumped who’s next in line ..no one wants to coach for the Raiders because of AL one guy i would love to come back Jon Gruden
obviously mandm8112 you have poor reading comprehension. Was our O-line suspect in 2008? Did we bring quality talent in 2009? Did Tom Cable say Harris was good enough to be our LT in 2008? IT IS TOM CABLES JOB AS THE HEAD COACH TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE QUALITY TALENT ON THE LINE?
“I just think the raiders lack good talent across the whole line.” REALLY, and whose job is it to bring in this Talent?
Did I not finish my statment with two questions?
Can Cable evaluate offensive line talent?
Could Cable only shop for offensive lineman in the trash-heap of FA?
Cable must accept his part of the O-line failure, and the injuries can explain some part of it, but not all! He is a good line coach, and he will show so if given the chance to keep working with the team! He wasnt ready for the task at hand when he came in, but now he knows what needs to be done! He aknowledged the Line problems, and said that Raiders would need to draft and get O and D line, which shows that he is ready to do what it takes! Give him a season without his hands tied, and then we would get results! The players rally behind him, and Big Al needs to accept that fact by supporting him and by cutting the strings attached. Besides, takes more than a year to create a team that fits the scheme, so the next season should show improvement, and the one after that could be a golden year.
Nyo, vick was a “run first-pass second” type of quarterback. No matter how good the protection was or wasn’t, he was still thinkin run
Nd can we get an update! How long does it take for al davis to fire sumone? Normally it doesn’t take long so does this mean cable is still gonna be our coach?
Haven’t seen any news on this for several days - Al(zheimer) must be playing his usual game of keeping the coach hanging while he trolls for something better (and probably cheaper too).
I’m hoping that during the next meeting between these two clowns, maybe Cable will have a flashback, think that Al looks like one of his ex-old ladies, and sock him around a bit. That would get Cable fired and put Al out of action long enough for Al’s kid to hire a GM, who could maybe hire us a real coach and start returning this organization to the first-class status it deserves…
