TIM BROWN OFFERS TO HELP RAIDERS, SAYS RUSSELL ‘NOT AN NFL QUARTERBACK’

Former Raiders standout wide receiver Tim Brown joined former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon and Adam Schein on “The SIRIUS Blitz” on SIRIUS NFL Radio on Thursday. During the wide-ranging interview, Brown weighed in on the Raiders situation, quarterback JaMarcus Russell, receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and other matters. Here is a transcript of the interview:

Host, Adam Schein: “If you reached out to Al Davis, what would you tell Al about how to fix the Oakland Raiders?”

Tim Brown: “I think it’s pretty simple, man.  I think he really just needs a football guy in there to help him out.  The one thing I tell people about Al Davis, there’s no doubt – and Rich, I’m sure, can vouch for this – Al Davis knows football.  It’s not a matter of him not knowing football.  I can remember even going back to my rookie year sitting at the Super Bowl with him in the booth, the great game when the 49ers came back and beat the Bengals, and he called that last drive play by play.  And he kept asking me, ‘What do you think Timma,’ he calls me Timma, ‘What do you think on this play, Timma?’  And I would say, ‘Slant to Jerry Rice.’  [He’d say,] ‘No, they’re going to throw it to Roger Craig.’  Boom.  And he went all the way down the field doing that.  That really convinced me that this guy knows football for sure.’  I think now what is happening is you have guys in the locker room that just don’t get it.  They don’t understand.  And certainly, the way the thing ended.  I leave sort of unexpectedly.  Jerry Rice wants out.  Rich gets hurt.  Jerry Porter wants out.  Charles Woodson wanted out.  You had a lot of guys trying to get out of the organization or leaving the organization unexpectedly.  And that’s hard to do anytime you have veteran football players who have been great for the organization.  When they get out like that, when they leave unexpectedly, it can be a very difficult thing to recover from.  And I just don’t think they have recovered.  They don’t have great veteran leadership and I think it’s very safe to say that.  It’s a team that is talented but they just don’t have the leadership, I believe, to take them to the next level.”

On JaMarcus Russell:

Brown: “When you look at JaMarcus, you know, the Raiders sort of called me unofficially before they drafted him and they asked me what did I think?  And I told them then that I didn’t think this guy was a player.  I thought it would take three to four years before he developed because I was at that LSU-Notre Dame game and I watched this guy intently warming up and throwing balls before the game and during the game and what I saw was not an NFL quarterback.  It was a sandlot player, a guy who can go back there, pat the ball five times and then throw it with that velocity he has in his arm.  But, Rich, you know better than me, you don’t have five pats in the NFL.  You’ve got about a pat and a half and then somebody’s about to take your head off.  And when he tried to throw the ball on time it came out like a rocket.  So I thought it would take significant time for this guy to develop how to drop back and throw the ball, a catchable ball that a receiver could maneuver and go on with.  So I’m not surprised what has happened with him.  You throw in the fact that, from what I hear, he doesn’t have the great work ethic that every quarterback has to have, that’s going to equal failure in the NFL any day of the week.”

On Darrius Heyward-Bey:

Brown: “When it comes to Heyward-Bey, I’ve seen Al do this several times.  He had Sam Graddy, he had Alexander Wright, James Jett turned out to be a decent player for them, played 10 years and made some incredible plays, and I’m sure Al sees Heyward-Bey as being a guy who can do the same things.  The only problem, what happened was they didn’t have a guy who was ‘the guy’ at the receiver position.  If they would have had that then they could have hid him a little more and gave him a time to get right.  But being that they didn’t have that in place already, all the focus was on him and then all the other receivers that came out this year, you know, you have [Michael] Crabtree coming in very late and dwarfing Heyward-Bey’s numbers by so many.  I think it just made it look like an even worse pick than everybody thought it was already.  So I think this kid will develop into something.  Obviously he has some talent but he really had some problems catching the ball.  Watching him on television I think he really had some perception problems picking up the ball and until they get that straightened out I think it’s going to be long, long career for him.”

On wanting to work with young Raiders receivers:

Brown: “I would love to do it and I’ve said that.  I’ve reached out to them and said, ‘Hey, give me a couple days with this guy and I can give you a real assessment of where he is and we go from there.’  I’m on my way right now to work with a couple of young college guys, [Kansas WR] Dez Brisco and [Brandon] LaFell out of LSU.  I would love to be able to pass on what God blessed me with to these younger guys but sometimes it’s a lot more difficult than we think it is.”

Schein: “What’s the Raiders’ reaction when you say you want to work with these guys?”

Brown: “Well, you know, everybody says ok but the phone never rings. …  I’m never going to step on anybody’s toes.  I’ll throw the offer out there and I’m not asking to get paid for it or anything.  I just don’t like, my name is so synonymous with the Raiders, that to hear people week in and week out dogging this organization, it’s very hurtful to me.  It’s something that I have to deal with.  So I have a vested interest in seeing this thing get turned around.”

  2. boltssuknutz says:

if Al Davis decides to replace Tom Cable, there’s a certain long-haired ex-Raiders assistant who’d love a chance to become Oakland’s new head coach.

“Hell, yeah, I’d have interest,” Rob Ryan told the USA Today for Friday’s editions. “I haven’t talked to Mr. Davis because he has a coach. Let’s see what happens.”

OHHHH NOOO~!!!!!!!!! say it isn’t soo! he sucked here…and he sucks there in cleveland! please no more D rated HC’s!!!!

  8. runraiderrun says:

has anyone ever predicted a play or player that a team will rely upon in a game.i do it all the time.i’m not a coach and no where near being an owner.remember AL WAS A DECENT TO GOOD COACH.i’m sure 40-50 years in the game will probably rub some knowledge on you.

  9. boltssuknutz says:

bahhahaa raiderkid! did you guys like green’s rub in LT’s face for the touchdown dance? that was awesome! and WOW!!! Vincent “classless” Jackson kicking the challange flag. bunch of crybaby, excessinve celebrating, classless, losers! wish I had the san diego post game reports and record all those tears streaming down their faces! 50 plus years and counting! LOL
on ANY play they say you could have a holding penalty called…well on the chargers on ANY play you could call them for excessive celebration. I hope the league cracks down on them in the future. they called chris johnson for excessive celebration in the houstin game when he just intercepted the ball in the endzone. every play the chokers have they rain confetti and have a parade and never get called.

How about the Jets fan getting arrested for chanting Jets, Jets, Jets. Those Fat SD Pigs tackled the guy in the stands and arrested him for it. Just like Merriwoman beating up Tila Tequila - this stories legs will fall quicker then they grow.

The media acts like SD is the classiest organization around, if this shit happened in Oakland it would be plastered all over every station in the USA.

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY HOW HAPPY I AM TO SEE THAT THE FAG CHARGERS CHOKED AGAIN IN THE PLAYOFF’S. WHAT A DELIGHT. WHEN IS THE REST OF THE NFL GOING TO RECOGNISE THAT NORV TURNER IS NO GOOD? HE RAN OUR TEAM INTO THE GROUND, AND NOW IT’S THE CHARGERS TURN. I THINK IT’S THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR THEM. AS A RAIDER FAN I OBVIOUSLY FIND JOY IN A DIVISION RIVAL FALLING ON THEIR SWORD. EXCEPT FOR LT, I THINK HE IS A CLASS ACT, AND ONCE AGAIN THE WORST RUN PRO SPORTS ORGANIZATION WILL CUT HIM LOOSE. AL, PLEASE FIND A WAY TO MAKE ROOM FOR HIM ON THE RAIDER’S ROSTER.

  15. raiderkid76 says:

Crazy thing is that when I got out of the house today there was a river and shredded charger merchandice flowing on the river. Of course it was the works of Phillip Cry me a Rivers. KSRaider I absolutly hate when the media acts like the chargers are a classy team. I remember hearing that idiot Colin Cowherd say that he liked the chargers because they were a classy team. Well I guess he is going to kiss Raider Nation AZZ!!!

  16. raiderkid76 says:

I should have said this much earlier but R.I.P Gaines Adams.

  17. webber says:

this site sucks do you ever plan on updating anytime soon? its been the same shit for a week

  18. insanity20mike says:

I agree Webber.. WTF is going on with the updates. I have to go to Pro Football Talk to get my updates now. Not even a word on Ryan to Oakland on here.. WTH(Hell)

Just saw Nnamdi on 1st and 10 (ESPN) saying how the players want Cable back and how we has the locker room behind him(cable does)

And When Skip mentioned Rob Ryan to the Raiders, Nnamdi’s smile grew bigger than ever.. Saying.. “I like that skip, I like that”

either Ryan or Cable is good with the Raiders team. but anyone else from the outside (unless its gruden or Madden) will be a No! No!

I just dont want another no name College coach or assistant to come here and then leave us after a yr or 2 and go on to be a championship calliber coach.. aka. Chucky,Kiffin(USC),Shannahan… or passing on Peyton,Whistenhunt,Belicheck(for gruden)..

just no little 20yr old assistance Al.

and DHB needs a real coach (WR Coach)

Russell needs to leave.. bring in Pennington. Fix the RT spot and release our small Center.

Felix Jones isnt better than DMC. thing is he has a bigger Oline that opens holes even for an undrafted RB in Choice. Even Lamont Jordan would be a Pro Bowl HB in Dallas with that Oline.

New coach will bring in his players and coaches.. will think he knows what the raiders problems are(TV and Media) and get rid of our good players.. Keep Cable he knows already who’s got it and who doesnt.. He has seen the players in practice and more than any other coach that comes here.

Remember Kiffin cleaning locker in 2007 and 2months after hired traded Moss>?

I like Thomas Howard and wouldnt want for him to go back to Texas Football. so keep cable.

  19. nightraider says:

how come there has been nothing posted on here in 3 days? what up with this site.

  20. 3headedmonster says:

I want Jim Harbaugh or Gruden to be a HC if not then Keep Cable and get him a OC … Seymour wants to resign yes ummm Al davis drags his behind so much make a decision get over it & move on

  21. boltssuknutz says:

Gaints coach set to interview w/raiders!!!!
Not Kevin Gilbride, but their defensive line coach is being said to interview with the Raiders for a similar position on the team per Profootball talk. DOn’t know if it has been mentioned on here, but I think it’s great news. It was the defensive line that won the Giants the SB a few years ago, and they always seem to produce dominate linemen. What’s this mean for the rest of the coaches though? Is Al hiring assistants before a HC again? Does this mean Cable stays? Hrmm.
kinda don’t know what to think on this one…..when marshall did as he knows…the D-looked awesome! but…we get a new D-cordinator…and get the staff put up into place and hire a new HC…WTF!!!! same shit as last year! it’s still AL’s agenda!
    AL: you’re hired!
new coaches: awesome! I setup me coordinators and serve notice to the ones in place to pack bags!!
AL: you wanna get fired already???? all I need you to do is stand up for me right or wrong and when I fart you just move your lips! and PS you better not cross John herrera! the guys is a genius!

  22. boltssuknutz says:

if this BS happens this offseason again w/AL picking everyone for the new HC…the Autumn Wind…will definately be the Autumn TOOT!!!

  23. jackson2dope says:

congrats to long snapper jon condo!! he was named to the pro-bowl today, definitely one of the unsung heroes of this team, alot of shane and sea-bass’s success is because of his work, i watched every game this year and i dont remember seeing one bad snap, congrats jon!!!! i figured i better say something because wex is apparently on vaction

the raiders could possibly have 5 pro-bowlers, nnamdi, lechler and condo are in for sure, if the colts make the super bowl dallas clark and dwight freeney wont play in the pro bowl, zach miller is an alternate at tight end and seymour is an alternate also, im not sure if he is an alternate at DT or DE tho, he played alot of both this year

  26. Most Hated says:

wake up RAider Beat..Man i guess its up to me to do a new topic…

Al Davis already interviewing candidates to become the Raiders’ new coach

David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reports Raiders owner Al Davis has interviewed prospective head coaches for more than two weeks, two league sources told The Chronicle, in the event he decides to fire Tom Cable.

Two people on his interview list have been identified as former Giants coach Jim Fassel, who now coaches UFL champion Las Vegas, and former Raiders offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, the head coach of CFL champion Montreal.

Several sources, including one within the organization, believe Davis may re-interview 2009 candidates Kevin Gilbride, the Giants’ offensive coordinator, and Winston Moss, a Packers assistant head coach, if he hasn’t already.

But what about Cable? He has not been fired, as far as anyone can tell. Team officials decline to say whether or not Cable will return for a second season. Cable has not responded to several phone messages.

Cable’s job security became an issue after a 5-11 season in which his offensive line gave up 49 sacks, his offensive play-calling produced 17 touchdowns and his top quarterback, JaMarcus Russell, was benched after nine starts.

If Davis has indeed made a decision on Cable, no one with the organization either knows or is talking about it. His inner circle is as small as it is airtight. If anyone knows Davis’ plans, they’re not saying!!!

Sorry man, but the coach that built that dominant unit is now the head coach of the Rams. This new guy had a really bad year.

On the bright side, the Chargers lost and they re-upped Norv! Norv freakin’ Turner! The dissapointment will continue in classy (ha!) SD.

I guess the people behind this site are trying to figure out how to pay for it, or just abandoning it. Oh well, it’s still a place to converse about the Raiders.

  29. timbrown4ever says:

I hope all these candidates we’re interviewing are only for the OC position. Keep Cable, bring in another strong offensive mind and bench Russell while telling him to have a weight requirement for camp. Also does anyone know any truth to the Rumor, that during the bye week, Russell received a blank DVD from Cable and Cable asked him two days later what he thought, and Russell said “looked good Coach” ??? If that is true that man can absolutely go to hell.
Also Raiderbeat, start some updates soon. We need you guys to pull through!!!

Wex and his staff have been interviewing for the coaching candidacies with the Oakland Raiders.

  33. NyoAZZ says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The world with their finger pointed at Al Davis.

We told you so you old fart.

Nobody wants to coach your team even with your so called vast knowledge of football.

    Sell, Sell, Sell!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. NyoAZZ says:

    How ’bout them Buffalo Raiders?

  35. King Raider says:

I would love life if al sold the team and they moved to be the New Jersey Raiders. Just has a nice ring to it.

raiders need LB,DEF LINEMAN,1 CB replace route’S shitty play,
AND TWO NICE O LINEMEN-NOT TO MENTION A QB ID LOVE TO SEE GARCIA MIKE VIC IN CAMP AND GRADCOWSKEEEEEEEE FIGHTING IT OUT

  38. raidr843 says:

this site hasn’t been updated in a week. Whats going on other than all the good coaches going to other teams?

  39. BlazinRaider420 says:

big time Raider fans here in Dirty Jersey!
yea it looks like they gave up on this site or about to start hittin us up for cash

  40. ernie72 says:

Yeah, I think Wex is testing us, what’s up Raider Beat?

  41. TenaciousD says:

Maybe Wex didnt know the season ended and is hangin around the locker room waiting to interview someone.

Regardless of who we get as a coach, it is evident that our team wont earn victories until we fix our O-Line. replacing Green and Carslile will go a long way. not happy with Sattelle but if there arent any better free agents, we shoul stick w/ him and Morris.

I cant take another minute of JaMoney. if he is still on scholarship then it will be a long season.

  42. Silverdog says:

    Cable says, “we’re getting close”.

  43. runraiderrun says:

kingraider, how about the Oklahoma City Raiders?even though i’m from N.J.

  44. runraiderrun says:

is my idea of dropping the ZBS becoming a reality?the raiders current o-line is big enough already.if the raiders do hire an OC and keep Cable as the HC there are some things to watch as far as personnel and scheme.meaning if Trestman is the OC,the o-line will go back to power blocking and won’t need the ZBS.if the OC is Fassel,Gilbride or Hue Jackson(baltimore),the ZBS will again not be needed.all these reported names being dropped are showing as a power blocking scheme.the top OT in the draft are from power blocking college schemes, even though the left tackle position isn’t heavily affected in the ZBS,but would make the transition from college to pro much easier for a rookie OT.

  45. Silverdog says:

If JaMarcus Russell is the quarterback, nothing else will matter - not the HC, not the staff, not the draft, not the OL or DL, nothing. Everything hinges on that decision. If he is in, I along with most of the Raider Nation are out until something that looks even half-way intelligent happens. The fan base is in your hands Al. Whatcha gonna do?

  46. dixie_normis says:

    Raidernews.com

  47. runraiderrun says:

no one is mentioning the 16,17,18 and counting of days that JaMarcus Russells’ OFFSEASON,THAT IS PROBABLY BEING NEGLECTED BY THE TEAMS UNDECIDEDNESS.does anyone think that the “raiders” or anyone under contract has given JR an offseason planned workout or scheduled routine.maybe that was what Las Vegas was about,to get away from Cable and the team, avoiding harsh words or some kind of trouble(trying to stop the bleeding).OR maybe that was why Randy Hanson was brought back,to make the offseason dvd’s and studying material for JR.Cable has said that there are some things that he was overwhelmed with.do you think he had enough time at the end of the season to mandate or oversee an offseason guidance program for JR.with AL DAVIS paying Tollner and Hackett, one of them has to be responsible for JRs’ offseason.if i was an Oakland media person,i would pay a little more attention to Hacketts’ offseason.

  48. runraiderrun says:

silvberdog, winning is all about the o-line.there isn’t a playoff team in the league that doesn’t have a good o-line.there isn’t an elite QB in the league that doesn’t have a good o-line.Gannon is a prime example every team he played for didn’t have a good o-line.as soon as he went to the raiders, who had a good o-line at the time,Gannon started to become the MVP of the league.build a o-line and the wins will follow.to give any QB a shot at being decent,is all an organization should/could do.peyton wouldn’t be peyton if he was on the raiders,is that a fact?

  49. runraiderrun says:

i hope everthing is o.k. with wexler in his private/professional life.i’m sure there is a situation, good or bad, that is keeping his attention.

  50. runraiderrun says:

a good cast of coaching could be in effect with the raiders.right now,i think there is a battle of “titles”,going on in Oakland.regardless of the outcome, the names being tossed around are good fits with each other.all of these coaches are intertwined.the raiders could go the “Giants” way or go the pedigree way via the Harbaughs coaching tree.either way,all the candidates are upgrades on the raiders staff.all these coaches are future head coach hires in the NFL.i like it.the raiders are going the coaching route instead of player free agency.this means don’t expect any big free agent signings.the raiders will spend there money in coaching and not on free agent players.this would be a good move for the raiders-because they defenitely have the talent already on the field.a couple pieces through the draft should make the raiders very competitive with the right mix of coaching.i personally, don’t care who the coaches are,it’s the schemes that are the raiders achilles heal.for instance, drafting McClain at LB and going to a 3-4 base;power blocking with big bodies on the o-line,will allow the offense as a whole to mesh with the speed at RB and WR.our QB position is the biggest need and problem, hence the coaching search.even though AL DAVIS is questioned about his draft picks, his need for the fastest players is never a wrong decision as long as the scheme fits.that’s his second biggest problem-he doesn’t draft for scheme fit.same as the coaching search,AL needs to do a G.M. search or allow the new hires to run their schemes unabatedly.AL DAVIS experiments every couple of years by hiring new coaches, why can’t he just try to allow other schemes to be used with this team.i have felt that the players talent on this team could be playoff caliber for a couple years now,the thing holding the team from being that is scheme.
