Former Raiders wide receiver Jerry Porter intends to test the free-agent market for a few days to see if any team is interested in paying him more than the Raiders are prepared to pay for his return.
If no knock-his-socks-off offer comes within the first few days of free agency, Porter will sign with the Raiders, a source close to Porter said Monday.
Porter spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career with the Raiders. He bolted for the riches of free agency last year, when the Jacksonville Jaguars handed him a huge contract.
The Jaguars released Porter, 30, earlier this month in response to their not receiving the kind of production they expected from Porter last season.
The Raiders are in need of help at receiver, even if Porter is too old and broken down to be a reliable starter. He started only six games last season and battled injuries from the outset.
Oakland’s leading wide receiver last season, Johnnie Lee Higgins, caught only 22 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns — all team-highs among wide receivers.
Porter caught 11 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown in 10 games for the Jaguars. A hamstring injury he sustained in training camp set him back early on, and he never regained the form that once made him a top-tier receiver.
Higgins, Javon Walker and second-year players Chaz Schilens and Arman Shields are the only receivers under contract. Drew Carter and Ashley Lelie will be unrestricted free agents unless they are re-signed between now and the start of free agency Thursday night at 9 PDT. Veteran Ronald Curry was released Friday.

Porter is the worst of both worlds. He is a T. Owens cancer w/out the T. Owens production to back it up. The guy was basically banned from the Jax locker room. I thought Cable was trying to change the culture. This is a step in the wrong direction.

Porter needs to understands the meaning of loyalty, he was never loyal to the raidernation so why should we want him. He proved nothing by going to the jags and didn’t put up any numbers worth wanting to bring him back! He complained, whined and was nothing but a negative cancer in the locker room. You could tell from Al’s last presser that he didn’t have warm thoughts about Porter. He referred to him and acknowledged that ‘we were all wrong about his greatness’ or something to that affect.

Everyone just needs to cool out!!!!! Al knows what he’s doing as you can see from the cuts that he made in the previous weeks. Jerry Porter is a fine receiver and will fit in nicely with the youngsters on our team, now if we could only find a QB to get him the ball without dumping it off short to the TE or RB it would be nice.
